Air Quality Assessment
Case Study
- Location:
Porthcawl, Wales - Client:
Aldi Stores Limited
Background
The planning consultant were supporting Aldi, who were seeking planning permission for a proposed supermarket at a two-acre site in Porthcawl, Wales. The planning consultant approached Aeolus Air Quality Consulting (AAQC) to produce an air quality assessment in support of the planning application.
Problem
As the traffic associated with the proposed supermarket was significant, a detailed air quality assessment was required which involved dispersion modelling.
Solution
AAQC first engaged with stakeholders such as the energy consultant, traffic consultant and ecologist to gain the data required. AAQC then determined and agreed a scope of work with the local authority.
An air quality assessment was undertaken, following the latest guidance from the Institute of Air Quality Management (IAQM) with Environmental Protection UK (EPUK) and other best practice methods.
As illustrated, the receptors most likely to experience change were modelled along with the road links for which traffic data had been provided. Air quality impacts were considered acceptable and the air quality assessment was delivered within one week.
Outcome
The client appreciated the prompt communications and turnaround time. The planning application was granted consent by the local authority, with works commencing in April 2022. The new Aldi store is expected to open in Autumn 2023.
