Odour Assessment
Case Study

  • Location:
    Leicester
  • Client:
    Design Studio Architecture

Background

The client was seeking planning permission for a proposed dark kitchen at a site in Leicester, which had the capacity to process hundreds of takeaway covers per day.

As operation of the proposed dark kitchen could lead to odour impacts, Leicester City Council (LCC) stated that an odour assessment was required to support the planning application. The client appointed Aeolus Air Quality Consulting (AAQC) to assist.

Problem

The proposed development could create unacceptable odorous impacts in an urban area. The client required an odour assessment to support the planning application.

Solution

AAQC initially engaged with the client to get the necessary information for a robust assessment. AAQC then undertook an odour assessment following the latest guidance on controlling odour from commercial kitchen exhaust systems. The assessment indicated the level of mitigation required.

AAQC collaborated with the appointed M&E and acoustic consultants at the design stage. This was to ensure that the filtration systems, stack height and stack velocity were sufficient to avoid unacceptable odour impacts.

Outcome

The client accepted the proposed mitigation required by the assessment in line with the latest guidance. The odour assessment was written into a technical note, which supported the planning application submitted in late 2022.
