Air Quality Monitoring Case Study
- Location:
London - Client:
Built UK
Background
The City of London Corporation (CoLC) had granted planning permission for extensive refurbishments at a commercial building in central London. A construction dusk risk assessment showed that the site was a ‘Medium’ risk with regards to dust impacts during the demolition phase.
The appointed main contractor had extensive experience across Australia, but this was their first construction project in the UK. The contractor approached Aeolus Air Quality Consulting (AAQC) in 2022 to assist with understanding UK air quality requirements and air quality monitoring.
Problem
To comply with Greater London Authority (GLA) guidance, the contractor had to agree two air quality monitoring locations with CoLC, install MCERTS air quality monitors, respond to real time alerts and submit monthly compliance reports.
Solution
AAQC first helped the contractor understand the air quality requirements. We then engaged CoLC: agreeing on air quality monitor locations, alert levels and reporting requirements.
AAQC own a small fleet of suitable air quality monitors. Two air quality monitors were installed at the site: if agreed thresholds were exceeded, alerts were sent to AAQC, CoLC and the contractor. AAQC acted upon the alerts by notifying the contractor, leading to instant mitigation. Monthly reports were produced for CoLC, outlining compliance with air quality objectives and any mitigation measures taken.
Outcome
AAQC will continue monitoring air quality at the site until the demolition works have been completed in 2023. Alerts continue to be responded to in real time with monthly compliance reports being issued to CoLC.
